UNION PACIFIC RR EXTRA-LARGE DIVIDED SILVER WINGED STREAMLINER SERVING PLATTER
This is an outstanding piece of railroad dining car silverware. Made for the Union Pacific Railroad, this divided platter carries an unusual UP Winged Streamliner top logo and is 18” long, weighing over just over five pounds. It is in superb condition, with only one minor plating spot near the divider. The logo is sharp and is unusual in that it has a circle around the winged train. I have seen one other piece that had this version of the logo, and that was made for the Southern Pacific in 1940. As my book, “Silver in the Diner,” notes the UP, SP, and Chicago & Northwestern launched the “City” streamliners in 1941 (City of Los Angeles, City of San Francisco, etc.) and it is likely that this was a piece made for UP diners on those trains (see page 294 of the book). The platter was made by the International Silver Company in 1940 and has the “U.P.R.R.” bottom mark along with the pattern number 05045A and the 1940 datecode. It is also unusual (unique?) in that it is divided lengthwise. I have never come across a railroad silver platter with that feature (and I have looked at a lot of silver over 40 years in the hobby). All in all, a great, one-of-a-kind example of UP streamline-era silverware. Buyer pays .00 shipping.
