SOLRAD 2 (GRAB) SATELLITE FULL SCALE MODEL
An important full size model of the
Solrad 2 satellite.  SOLRAD was a US made combination solar radiation (solar) and spy surveillance device intended to map the Soviet Union’s air defense radar locations during the Cold War.  This is a model of America’s first surveillance satellite.
The SOLRAD program was developed by the United States Navy’s Naval Research Laboratory.  The scientific package aboard the satellite provided cover for the GRAB (Galactic Radiation and Background) electronic surveillance package.
SOLRAD 2 was launched along with Transit 3A atop a Thor-Ablestar rocket on 30 November 1960, but both satellites failed to reach orbit when the booster flew off course and was destroyed, raining debris over Cuba.
There are no electronics inside this full size model.
Measures

Body is approximately 20” in diameter.  Long antennae are approximately 16 3/4” long, giving an overall maximum width of 53 1/2”.
Approximate weight is 20 lbs.
This unbelievable aluminum model will require professional
crating to ship.  If you are local, I can deliver it for a nominal charge.
