The launch vehicle patch is a shield shaped honoring a legacy of Atlas NRO missions.  The Atlas A honors the history of the Atlas launch program.  The patch features an Atlas V 401 in flight leaving a contrail.  The world is at the bottom.  The Egyptian god Anubis stands behind the world watching the Atlas in flight.  Egyptian mythology associates the number 38 with Anubis.  Anubis is the god of embalming and protector of the dead.  He was responsibile for weighing a persons heart against the feather of truth in the hall of justice.  The 5 SLS stars are depicted on the breastplate.  AV-023 is the tail number and NROL-38 is the mission number.  Around the edge of the shield are the entities involved in the launch - National Reconnaissance Organization, United Launch Alliance, Launch and Range Systems Direcorate and the 45 Space Wing.
