Description
Flying into Latin America can be more challenging and far more dangerous than Domestic flying or even highly in the structured N. Atlantic/European operations. Some Latin American destinations have multiple hazards to air ops, and ATC facilities may provide no help in avoiding them. Or worse, ATC may contribute to an accident.Enroute and terminal radar coverage may be limited or non-existent. Mountains, larger and more extensive than anything you have seen, will loom up around you during descent, approach and departure. Communications, navigation, weather problems and ATC philosophy peculiar to Latin America may conspire with disastrous results.
The greatest danger is pilot complacency.
From 1979 - 1984, 44 major accidents involving large commercial aircraft occurred in S. America. The high number of accidents demands that we learn from the mistakes of others, hence this guide. Reprint. American Airlines publication. 116 pages.
